SJR in One Sentence
The SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) is a free, publicly available bibliometric metric that measures the scientific influence of a journal by weighting each citation it receives by the prestige of the citing journal — not simply counting citations.
Developed by the SCImago Lab (a Spanish research group) and based on data from Elsevier's Scopus database, SJR is widely used as a free alternative to Clarivate's paywalled Impact Factor.
The Core Difference from Impact Factor
The fundamental idea is borrowed from Google's PageRank algorithm: not all citations are equal. A citation from Nature Medicine should count for more than a citation from a little-read regional journal — just as a link from a major news website carries more weight than a link from an obscure blog.
Impact Factor counts citations. A citation from any indexed journal counts the same.
SJR weights citations. A citation from a high-prestige journal counts proportionally more. This makes SJR more resistant to citation gaming.
How SJR Is Calculated
SJR uses an iterative algorithm similar to PageRank. At a high level:
- Each journal starts with an equal share of "prestige"
- When journal A cites journal B, it transfers some of its prestige to B
- This process runs iteratively until prestige values stabilize across all journals
- The final SJR score reflects the steady-state prestige of each journal
The calculation uses a 3-year citation window (vs. 2 years for Impact Factor), which is more appropriate for fields where research matures slowly. It also normalizes for self-citations.

SJR values are field-normalized: a hematology journal with SJR 2.0 is likely Q1 in its field, while a general medicine journal would need a much higher SJR to reach Q1.
Why SJR Matters for Literature Searching
When you search PubMed, you typically get results ordered by relevance or date — with no indication of journal quality. This means a landmark randomized trial in NEJM appears alongside a single-center retrospective study in a low-ranked journal, with nothing to distinguish them visually.
SJR provides a fast, objective quality signal. When you know a paper comes from a journal with SJR 8.4 vs. SJR 0.4, you can immediately calibrate how much evidentiary weight to give it — before you even read the abstract.
SJR and evidence hierarchy
SJR is a journal-level metric, not an article-level one. A paper in NEJM (SJR ~60) may still be a flawed study. A paper in a niche Q2 journal may be methodologically rigorous. Use SJR as a prior, not a verdict.
