The Definition
The h-index (Hirsch index) is a metric that attempts to capture both the productivity and the impact of a researcher's output in a single number. It was proposed by physicist Jorge Hirsch in 2005.
A researcher has an h-index of h if they have published at least h papers that have each been cited at least h times.
A Concrete Example
Paper 1: 85 citations
Paper 2: 60 citations
Paper 3: 42 citations
Paper 4: 38 citations
Paper 5: 25 citations
Paper 6: 18 citations
Paper 7: 12 citations
Paper 8: 8 citations → fewer than 8 papers have ≥ 8 citations? No: papers 1–8 all have ≥ 8. Paper 9 has 5.
→ Papers 1–8 each have ≥ 8 citations. Paper 9 has only 5. h-index = 8.
The h-index cannot exceed the total number of publications, and it cannot exceed the total citation count. It is bounded from above by both.
Where to Find a Researcher's H-Index
- Google Scholar — free, broadest coverage (includes books, preprints, grey literature), tends to give the highest h-index
- Scopus (Elsevier) — subscription required; peer-reviewed literature only
- Web of Science (Clarivate) — subscription required; most conservative estimate
The same researcher will have a different h-index on each platform. Always specify the source when citing an h-index.

These are rough benchmarks. Field, career length, and institution all influence what is "normal."
Strengths of the H-Index
- Balances quantity (number of papers) with quality (citations received)
- Resistant to a single very-cited outlier paper inflating the score
- Easy to understand and communicate
- Increases monotonically — it never decreases over a researcher's career
Limitations You Must Know
Field dependence
Exactly like Impact Factor, h-index reflects the citation culture of a field. A biologist with h=40 and a mathematician with h=15 may have equivalent research impact within their respective communities — the comparison is meaningless across fields.
Career length bias
A senior researcher with 30 years of output will almost always have a higher h-index than an early-career researcher of equivalent per-paper quality. The h-index grows with time.
Does not capture the magnitude of impact
A researcher with one paper cited 10,000 times and nine papers cited once has h=1. A researcher with ten papers each cited exactly 10 times also has h=10. The h-index cannot distinguish between these very different profiles.
Author order is ignored
First author and last author (principal investigator) contributions are treated identically to middle-author contributions — which dramatically overstates the output of researchers who frequently appear as middle authors on large collaborative papers.
The h-index is a useful career-level summary metric for evaluating researchers. It should not be used in isolation — always consider field, career stage, and the quality of individual papers. For evaluating a specific paper, use journal quartile and SJR rather than the author's h-index.
