What Reviewers Actually Look For
Is the problem important? Does the evidence base justify this study now? Cite recent, high-impact literature — not textbooks.
What does this study do that has not been done? A marginal improvement on an existing trial is rarely fundable.
Can your team actually do this, in the time frame, with the budget requested? Reviewers are sceptical of over-ambitious plans.
Common Mistakes
The background section that lists studies without connecting them to a gap. Reviewers need to see clearly why this study is the logical next step.
Funders publish priorities. A proposal that does not explicitly address the funder's stated objectives is almost always rejected.
Three focused aims beat ten diffuse ones. Each aim should be achievable independently — the failure of one should not sink the entire project.
